Traditionally, having a baby shower before the birth was very common. Today it is a matter of personal choice and convenience.

4 Month Baby

If the shower is to be held before the birth, then it is preferable that the gifts should be those related to newborn babies and in neutral colors as well as gender neutral.

Today it has become popular to hold the shower a month or two after the birth. It has its own advantages, like mother is somewhat worry free about her pregnancy. She doesn't have that large belly, so can participate in more games and other activities. She can eat whatever she feels like, unlike when she was pregnant.

Sometimes it can be more appropriate to host a shower after the birth if the mother is having a difficult pregnancy or her religion discourages celebrating the baby's birth beforehand.

Having the baby shower after the baby is born has other advantages as well. Now you can be certain that the gifts can relate to the gender of the newborn.

So as to when to have a baby shower, before or after is just fine, but it is a good idea not to hold the shower too near the anticipated birth date. Otherwise the mother's health may not be good enough for her to enjoy or even take part in the games or activities. Also, the baby could of course arrive late or prematurely.

Similarly, the next issue while choosing when to have a shower is to know whether she is a first time mother, or if this her second or more birth.

Baby showers before the baby arrives are great fun for first-time mothers to look forward to in the last month of her pregnancy. In this case the expectant couple (she and the daddy) can play and dream with all the gifts while awaiting their dream baby. For the second and subsequent babies, baby showers (also called sprinkles) can be held before or after the baby is born. The upside of holding the baby shower after the baby's birth is that gifts can be chosen by the gender of the baby and mother is more relaxed.

As per the old tradition, a baby shower is only held for the first baby. However, the modern view is that baby showers can be held for successive babies as well. Frankly speaking, it is a matter of personal preference and we have seen baby showers for 4th or 5th babies.

However, it is considered to be a good idea if the hostess can confirm and discuss with the guest of honor and potential guests how they feel about holding a second or third. If a majority of the people agree, you have all the reasons you need to go ahead with the shower.

Generally gifts for the subsequent baby showers are being targeted to more useful everyday items. Those that the baby may need and most of the time they are less expensive than for the first baby. However, nothing can stop you if you wish to give more expensive gifts on any subsequent showers.

My personal viewpoint is that a baby shower should be held for every baby. Moreover, showers are not just gift giving and taking rituals, but something more than that. They are given to bless and congratulate the mom-to-be and her family. But that is just my personal opinion, so go with what you have planned either way.

Baby showers are a time tested noble celebration. A social event and a good excuse for friends and family to get together and to celebrate the birth of a baby.

Moreover, in recent times pregnancies and deliveries have become quite an expensive affair. So this could help the parents financially as well.

How much should my baby eat?

When your baby starts consuming solid foods, (usually it happens at the age of (4) 6-8 months) you will be probably wondering how much food your baby should eat. Most of the pediatrics say that you have to give your baby as much food as he or she wants.

But you have to remember that during the period of introducing solid foods to baby's diet, breast feeding or formula is still the most important part of your baby's feeding. At the age of few moths breast milk or formula provide baby with nutritious elements.

Every baby is different and there is no chart or guideline that will show how much food your baby has to eat. In order to keep your baby healthy, you have to offer a well balanced diet of solid foods. It will help to ensure that your baby is eating the right amount of the good nutritious foods.

Here are some signs showing that baby wants to eat more or has enough of food:

Baby doesn't want to eat any more: He or she doesn't want to eat any more and is closing mouth when you try to give another spoon of food. Baby can spit the food from the mouth. Or can turn the head away.

Your baby wants to eat more: Baby is opening the mouth when the spoon is closer. Baby is leaning for the spoon or is grabbing food and trying to put it in the mouth.

How to make sweet potato?

1. First peel sweet potatoes and cut them into small chunks.
2. Put chunks into a pan with some water. Put enough water to cover potatoes.
3. Next "steam" boil potatoes until they become tender.
4. Leave some water to use it for thinning out the sweet potatoes.
5. Remove the skin if you baked sweet potatoes and use liquid you prefer.
6. Put potato into bowl and puree it.
7. Add some water or other liquid to achieve smooth consistency.

Jaundice- The yellowing of baby due to an increased amount of
bili reuben in the blood. Usually this will disappear within
about two weeks or 14 days. In some cases especially in
premature babies, babies need to be treated and stay under a
special bili rueben light until bili Reuben levels return to
normal. Jaundice is more common in boys and in babies that are
premature, jaundice is nothing to be to concerned about, your Dr
will let you know if baby needs treatment or not.

4 Month Baby

Infant Acne- You might find it odd as I did, that your newborn
little angel has what looks like little zits all over his/her
little face. This is most common in breastfeed babies because
the baby is getting extra hormones through there mother's milk.
Not to worry this will go away just as quickly as it started it
might take a few weeks, but it won't leave scars or marks. In a
few weeks you will have that beautiful soft as a baby's butt
skin you always imagined.

Taking care of the umbilical cord- Don't give baby a full bath
until the umbilical cord falls off. Sponge baths will do just
fine. Keep the umbilical cord dry and exposed to a lot of air.
Clean the umbilical cord with alcohol.

Turn the diaper down and the shirt up. Also try and protect the
skin around the umbilical cord. Alcohol can irritate the skin
and make it red. Try putting lotion or baby powder around the
belly button, and try using a cotton swab to dab on the alcohol.

The umbilical cord stub will fall off in a week or two, and
then you can give baby his/her first bath.

Circumcision- To take care of a baby after circumcision is
usually not a pleasant experience for you or your baby. To make
baby more comfortable use double diapers to help cushion baby
from rubbing against the circumcision. Now a days Dr's use a
circumcision ring and that will fall off when the area has
healed.

Bowel Movements- Your newborn baby should have 5 or more dirty
diapers a day. This seems like quite a lot but its normal. In
newborn babies watery loose stools are also normal.

Spitting Up- It may seem like more is coming back up then going
down, but this is not the case. Chances are a teaspoon or two
is all that is coming up although it looks like a lot more. If
baby is drinking formula the formula may not agree with him/her,
so discuss your concerns with your Doctor.

4 Month Baby

1. Somewhere for the baby to sleep.

This could be a cot, carrycot or crib. A lightweight and portable bed is often seen as best during the first few weeks as your baby will be sleeping a lot and it will help if you can move the sleeping place from room to room. You will normally need to buy a cot by around 6 months depending on how quickly your baby grows.

2. A Pram.

A pram or pushchair is one of the most expensive purchases in the first year. Full size traditional prams are very hard wearing and warm and comfortable. They are usually at the more expensive end of the range but seem to keep their value well when sold on. Many parents opt for a pram in 2 parts; a fold down frame and a top which can be used as a carrycot with handles. Things to bear in mind with this are that escalators can be difficult as well as travel on buses. You need to decide how you will be travelling, where your destinations will be and then choose the systems that suit you best.

3. Car Seat

If travelling by car you should always use a car seat and follow the manufacturer's instructions for fitting. The car seat should be the correct type of seat for the stage of your baby. This is one item that you should definitely buy new as you won't know if a second-hand seat has been damaged. Learn how to fit and use your car seat properly.

4. Clothing

Most first time parents go a little overboard when buying for their first child. Buy what you need as a minimum and spend the money on clothing for a slightly older age when your baby is born. Here's what you need:

2 shawls or wraps

4 vests

4 stretch suits

2 cardigans

1 snowsuit or similar

3 pairs of socks (unless all clothing has feet)

1 pair of mittens

1 hat

5. Changing Equipment

There's a lot of debate at the moment as to the choice of disposable or terry nappies/diapers. The choice is yours but most people opt for disposable nappies/diapers. New babies will get through at least 6 nappies/diapers a day so stock up!

Nappies/Diapers

Baby lotion/cotton wool balls or baby wipes

- Normal advice is to use water and cotton wool initially and then use olive oil as a moisturiser on a newborn baby

6. Feeding Equipment

For bottle feeding you will need:

Bottles (I would recommend 6)

A sterilizing kit

Formula milk

Burping towels

Bibs

7. Baby chair/Bouncer

Choose one that supports the baby's head if you plan to use this from birth. Your baby will love to see what's going on but you shouldn't put the chair or bouncer on a raised surface. The arrival of your first child is a magical time and preparation for this special time can lead you to 'spoil' your child before it is born by buying loads of clothing and equipment. Your baby will grow out of its' clothing after 3-4 months and it won't really ever get the clothes that dirty.

You can save a lot of money by using second hand clothing and equipment and if you are on a budget or are just conscious watching what you spend you can certainly go down this route with confidence. If buying equipment stay away from really old equipment and check for any signs of damage. Operate any moving parts and ensure that the equipment is fit for purpose. As stated, always buy a new car seat.

Working with veterinary surgical specialists over the last several years has really opened my eyes to the possibilities that exist. Not to mention the fact that I have had to take advantage of some of these "possibilities" for not only personal pets, but also for rescue animals in my care.

4 Month Baby

So, what kinds of injuries require specialty orthopedic surgery?

Broken bones, of course, come instantly to mind. But, does your pet need to be seen by a surgical specialist, or can your primary veterinarian repair the fracture? Well, this depends not only on the complexity of the fracture and the procedure to repair it, but also on the skill and experience of your veterinarian. I have seen cases where the pet had to undergo additional surgery by a specialist after a first attempt by a primary care physician. Think of it this way: if you had been hit by a car and required major surgery, would you go to your GP, or would you want to be operated on by a surgeon?

Joint injuries are also very common, especially in large, athletic breeds, and in overweight dogs. We routinely operate to correct torn cruciate ligaments and luxating patellas. These procedures are usually fairly costly, and the last thing you want to do is try to save a few dollars by having an inexperienced doctor perform these procedures. I have seen hip surgeries go so badly that there is no longer anything for a specialist to work with. There is nothing as difficult as telling a client that you could have helped their pet -- if you had been able to operate first, or sooner.

Recovery and rehabilitation are difficult for many pets, and for their owners! It takes a long time for bones to heal properly. So, if you pet needs orthopedic surgery, you are looking at approximately 12 to 16 weeks -- yes, that's 3 or 4 months! -- before "Roscoe" will be able to go back to normal, off leash activity. I'm not sure who this is more difficult on, the patient, or the owner. But, the worst thing you can do is assume that because "Roscoe" doesn't seem to be in any pain, you can relax on the exercise restrictions. You don't want "Roscoe" to end up back in the operating room, or worse, end up not being able to be restored to normal activity at all.

Not only have I seen pets have to come back for second, third, even fourth surgeries, I have also seen dogs that had to be put down because their prognosis for recovery was so poor when exercise restrictions were not followed. When the surgeon says 2 weeks in a crate, and an additional 8 weeks of on-leash walking only, she means it!

The use of orthotic devices is an option for pet owners when surgery is risky or to help in your pet's recovery process. Custom braces can support the operated limb and allow proper healing to take place. They can also help correct the limb's function without surgery. Your surgeon will be able to let you know whether this is an option for your pet.

Baby Girl is a beautiful Australian Shepherd at Mill Creek Animal Rescue. She came to us when she was about six months old with a horrible limp. I took her to an orthopedic surgeon. X-rays showed that she had suffered a fracture of her front left leg at some point in the past. Unfortunately, this was never treated, and there was a mal-union of the radius/ulna. Her ulna had tried to grow, but was growing out, rather than in length, while the radius continued to grow normally. This resulted in her paw being pushed sideways at a terrible angle. The doctor felt that although she had probably attained 65% of her full size, that surgery would benefit her and provide improved quality of life.

Baby Girl underwent surgery in early January. A 1 centimeter segment of the ulna was removed, and then the bone stabilized by divergent pins. The x-rays looked promising, and her foot appeared much straighter than it had pre-surgery. Now, Baby Girl thought she was better immediately. She wanted to romp and play the day after surgery. But, having seen post-surgery disasters, I followed the aftercare instructions to the letter. Two weeks post surgery, the splint came off. Baby Girl was walking much more normally, but still remained crated except for 3 or 4 daily leash walks.

Last month, Baby Girl returned for x-rays to determine whether or not the bone had healed. The x-rays revealed: SUCCESS! Although a pin had migrated and had to be removed, Baby Girl was released back to full, unrestricted activity -- much to her joy and mine!

In closing, orthopedic surgery can greatly improve your dog's quality of life. If your dog requires surgery, first find a good orthopedic surgeon. If your primary care veterinarian doesn't have a recommendation for you, visit the ACVS (American College of Veterinary Surgeons) website for the name of a specialist near you. And, whatever you do, follow the aftercare instructions. It may be difficult on both of you, but in the long run, you'll be glad you did!

For a full month after delivery, Chinese mothers are confined to the home in order to recuperate. They are served with special Chinese herbs to speed up recovery, and are restricted to numerous post-delivery customs. For instance, bathing in cold water and drinking un-boiled water are taboo during these times. Conversely, red date drinks and ginger cooked chicken are a must within the confinement menu. It is also common amongst Chinese families to engage the help of a Confinement Lady for a month. Skilled in the arts of confinement, she cooks and cares for the mother, and advises her on all the dos and don'ts of post-natal traditions.

4 Month Baby

Typically, a full moon feast is held where friends and relatives are invited to welcome the arrival of the new baby to the family. Nevertheless, the grandeur of this feast may vary between families. Some may opt to host a banquet, much like a Chinese wedding, while others may choose to have a party at home. Of course, with the new baby as the center of attention, this is an excellent opportunity for the proud parents to show their baby off to the adoration of their guests.

Another special full moon tradition of the Chinese would be the presentation of baby full moon gift packs to friends, colleagues and relatives. Delightful treats such as glutinous rice with tumeric, hard boiled eggs dyed in red, curry chicken and an ensemble of Chinese cakes.

The most popular of the Chinese tarts most commonly used in full moon gift packs would be the "Ang Koo" cake. Made of a mixture of glutinous rice floor, sweet potato and red dye kneaded into dough, each tart is inserted with a filling of soft green peas and pandan leaves. When the cake is cooked, a mould resembling a tortoise shell would be used to form the unique surface of the "Ang Koo". In Chinese culture, this would resemble longevity and prosperity. A must in a full moon gift pack would be a red egg in each pack that signifies new life and good luck. Served with pickled ginger, these eggs are boiled with the shells specially dyed in red.
