Your Baby - Month 8

By the end of the eighth month, some babies have already learned how to feed themselves. If so, then parents can begin introducing sippy cups instead of using bottles for drinks. They should choose a cup that has handles so that it is easier for the baby to hold. Spouts or straws can be used. It is also important to use plastic or stainless steel cups that are free of BPA, which can interfere with development.

Although still too young for rules and time-out, the baby may begin testing parents' authority by throwing objects or pulling hair. Such acts are less about defiance than they are about curiosity. It is important for new parents to remember this. When a baby throws something, they are not trying to upset their parents-they are merely exploring the world around them. Distraction is the best defense.

Many babies will also have developed a few teeth by this age. Teething can be a difficult time for the infant. Babies usually begin to show teeth between four and seven months of age. Parents can provide safe and soft teethers to alleviate some of the baby's discomfort.

During the eighth month, the baby's emotions will be even more evident. Some studies have found that babies can show empathy at this early stage. For instance, an infant who hears another infant crying may start to cry. The baby will likely begin to imitate those around him or her and will begin learning how to decipher moods. So watch out, the training has begun.
